Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
Mum could not figure out where all our bears went, we had them stashed in our shark, not any more! Then Mum was putting some of us away, she was looking for Bombay when she found him she found the bears! Bombay decided he needed some friends to sleep with so he brought the bears to his favorite sleeping place. He is a silly little man!

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters.
I've been watching Mum grin from ear to ear, muttering how blessed we are to have so many folks support what she does on a daily basis. I know I am getting mushy but I just had to share what happened here at the shelter the other day. We have a new shelter volunteer… Avery! Avery and her Mom came to help last Sunday. Avery spent most of her day in the room with the Long Island crew, Ruby fell in love with Avery. Jamie - Avery's Mom and Mum were taking picture of fur kids, Avery was helping keep the ferrets in the room occupied. Miss Jamie is a photographer.
Our blessings are many, we wanted to share these beautiful pictures of our newest, youngest volunteer.

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
Dropping in once again with a tidbit of news. We got a box for Christmas from Mr. Antonio in Brazil. He requested that Cooper open the box. Mum got pictures of him with the ferretone Mr. Antonio sent us and another of Cooper too tired to have his mid-morning soup. Mum got several pictures taken before his little nose smelled the soup enough to wake up. You can find updates here.

Lance here, see I told you! Take a look at where Max has gotten himself! While Mum was doing meds this morning, she had Max and Shy out and about, they had the run of the playroom and ferret room (barrier open) while Mum worked her way between the rooms serving soup. Just like what Jack and Mike were doing the other day.
Mum went back into the playroom and found Max had gotten up where Mum stores the clean blankies, Max was helping by knocking them off the top of the cage. Mum says he almost knocked himself off the top too.
Mum grabbed the camera before removing him from the top of the mountain of blankies and setting him back on the floor. Mum and Miss Donna D. made an adjustment to the cage so it was more secure in keeping the blankies from falling off too easily.
While Mum was at it she made an adjustment to the barriers way on the other side of the shelter playrooms. Shy was able to climb the barriers and was always getting into places she had no business getting into!
Miss Nicky and Mr. Mike S. left us some drainage tubes on Fuzz Butt day. Mum and her 2 legged furless granddaughter measured, cut and split the drainage tube so Mum could slip it over the top of the barrier and keep Sly where Mum puts her. It's a bit harder for Mum to climb the barrier but it is easier to keep track of Sly and Max.

Hello Cyber friends and supporters,
I have some funnies to share, Mum wasn't so amused; While Mum was doing meds the other day, she had Jack and Mike out and about, they had the run of the playroom and ferret room (barrier open) while Mum worked her way between the rooms serving soup.
Mum came back into the ferret room and found Mike had gotten up on the work station, he was helping himself to soup. Mum says there is never a dull moment in this house. She grabbed the camera before removing him from the counter top and setting him back on the floor.

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
Mum got this message in her email inbox in June 2018, "Dr. Edwards suggested I contact you about doing a ferret presentation for our summer vet camp in Batavia, NY. July 9 - 9-12. This is a camp run by our local Business Education Alliance (BEA) and BOCES for 7th and 8th graders and held at the animal science room at the Batavia BOCES."
Mum was already signed up to do a summer bus run, she took the the 9th off to go to Batavia to teach the camp kids about us fur kid. Mum took the business of 4, Cooper, Reggie, Ruby and Star. Mum gets pictures of our set up before the students come in. The students had a wonderful time hanging with the fur kids.
Mum took pictures of each of the classes. I didn't get to go, Mum took this business because Cooper needs medicine in the middle of the day, that way she could give him his meds. It was a long hot day but it was worth it when you see the smiles on the students faces.
Miss Ili came to take care of the shetler while Mum was gone. Thank Miss Ili!

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters, I've got some happy news to share! The little ferret girl that was in New Jersey, the one that needed a ride to Naples?
Well thanks to all of the shares and thumbs up on our Facebook page she got a ride, she is here! Mr. Mike and Miss Nicky met her previous family in Binghamton New York and brought Bandit to Mum, Monday afternoon.
Bandit did well for the first 24 hours but as the hours ticked by she slowly discovered her life had dramatically changed. Bandit started showing signs of shelter shock on Wednesday.
It was time for some intervention, to keep her from getting so sick she couldn't recover! Mum always introduces all the new fur kids to duck soup when they get here. If they like soup when they are sick you can administer medications, and keep them going with dropper feedings. Here is the link to the story behind Duck soup, and how to get them to like it, this link includes our duck soup recipe and many others.
Okay back to Bandit;. Mum got her back on track, Bandit is no longer convinced that duck soup is poison. Mum still has to dropper feed her the soup but she has gone from 5 ml to 25 ml at feeding time. Mum says she feels Bandit is out of danger of shelter shock, now Mum just needs to keep an eye on her glucose numbers, Bandit has Insulinoma.
There is lots of things yet to share so I guess I will get this out, then I will start working on the news letter. Mum wanted people to know that Bandit found a ride from New Jersey to Naples New York.

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters
Lance here bouncing in to bring you some good news. Remember we told you until Mum gets back to moving her feet fast as lightning, Mum was going to do things differently here at the shelter? Doc Charlie has her almost there but she is still taking things slow on the shelter front and doing things smart! Miss Kathy C. tells Mum that a lot, you are doing things smart!
We reported a couple of weeks ago that Mum was back to work part time. Doc Charlie has her doing 2 runs a day not 3 until they re-evaluate her health on March 9th. Depending on what Doc Charlie finds will depend on if she goes back to work on March 12th doing 2 or 3 runs a day. Mum is moving faster, not back to her lightning fast, but faster than she has been moving while she was out of work. Mum is having more good days than bad, which is what she and Doc Charlie have been working towards.
However Mum is still being careful about what happens around here. Mum was contacted about 2 ferrets that needed a new home in January, would/could Mum take them. Mum made arrangements early on when she fell ill, with some families that have adopted from us in the past to stand by to take in fur kids if they needed a place to go. Mum will take fur kids from animal control, ASPCA, municipalities or out on the street running around without human supervision fur kids, but private family surrenders are being slid into their new homes without Mum taking them into the shelter. Mum wants to be fully recovered before she fills up the cages with fur kids.
That being said Miss Danielle B. came to our rescue! 2 fur kids in Albany needed a place to go so Miss Danielle B. took them in February 7, 2018.
We have a second family that has been visiting to see if they could find a friend for their ferret Murray. Murray met Shasta a few weeks ago, she got to meet him again last Saturday, and things went well. Miss Tina B. did the home visit for us, gave the family a paws up. In human speak Miss Tina B. told Mum it's a good place to let Shasta go to live. Mum took Shasta up to see OFD for a health checkup and update vaccines so she can go to her new home this coming Saturday February 24, 2018.
So life at the Farm is moving along in a positive direction. When Mum is asked how she is feeling she says, I'm vertical, moving with a fluid gate and managing the discomfort so LIFE IS GOOD!
Okay it's time for me to go bounce

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
We have some exciting news! Mum took her physical performance test Friday morning, this is a required test if Mum wants to go back to driving the big yellow thingy after being out sick all this time. She Passed the test!
Doc Charlie has signed a return to work slip so she can be back to work Monday morning. Doc Charlie has her on part time work for two weeks to see how things go. But as of now Mum is going back to work.
Mum is excited about going back to work. We not so much, we are sad she is not going to be home with us all day like she has been for several months. We got used to having her home with us all day, every day.
But we do understand we need to let her get back to doing what she does now that she is feeling better.
Mum has spent many years sharing her time between the two legged furless kids and us 4 legged fur kids. 20 of them to be exact.
We know sharing Mum with the two legged furless kids is important to Mum. We expect it will take Mum a bit of time to get back into the routine of in and out all day. As we told you last time we sent news, her feet don't move quite so fast as they used to however they are picking up speed.
We thought we should share the good news.

January 27, 2018:
Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
Mum and me are sounding the alarm about…. Laundry, clean and dirty!
Mum has spent a lot of years getting tearful telephone calls and emails telling her of the accident that happened that took a fur kids life.
Mum tries to teach ferrents about the dangers of things to us 4 legged fur kids around the home. Sometimes she is successful in getting the humans to listen and take seriously the dangers she is trying to tell them about. Sometimes not so much. That's when Mum cries a lot!
What we are sounding the alarm about is laundry - dirty and clean. We fur kids love to sleep in dirty laundry, we love to sleep in clean laundry, anything that is laying on the floor we can crawl into to sleep is a great place to take a nap. We also love to climb up, up, up to places that are probably not so safe for us to get to. Actually I know they aren't safe because Mum scrambles to catch us doing it before we reach our destination.
Mum has devised a way to keep us from getting washed in the washing machine, (yes she has gotten calls about fur kids getting washed) she has devised a way to keep us from getting dried in the clothes dryer, (yes, she has gotten calls about drying a fur kid) she had devised a way for us to climb mountains of clean laundry safely within the safety of our playrooms.)
You see, Mum keeps the dirty laundry basket up on a shelf that she can reach and is easy to fill with dirty laundry but we can't get to it to sleep in it. She makes sure that anything sitting on the floor is not going to get picked up and tossed to the basement laundry room with one of us in it. ( yes, she has gotten calls about kids being tossed to the basement)
However; Mum keeps us gloriously happy by putting the clean laundry on the floor in the ferret room as she brings it up from the laundry room. Piles and piles of it, (well until she gets a minute to fold it and put it away)
We get to climb the mountains of clean laundry with no worry about getting washed, dried or tossed to the basement where we would have acess to getting outdoors where other fur animals live that can harm us. Mum says they would eat us for lunch. I am of the fur kind that would rather eat lunch than be lunch thank you very much.
Shy, and Big Mike are our two most creative climbers, so having a pile of clean laundry on the floor for them to get their climbing in, keeps them happy, and keeps Mum's feet planted firmly on the floor because they are not on top of a cage that Mum has to pull them off from.
Please be mindful of where you put your dirty laundry so you don't make a mistake and wash your fuzz butt. We don't come out of the washer in very good condition if you toss us in there.

Okay enough of this serious stuff!
