Initial Contact, April 18, 2023:
Good morning! We are in a tough situation and are hoping you can help us out. My daughters have a 3 year old ferret named Phoebe that sadly we cannot provide her the life she deserves. When we adopted her and her brother, we didn't know how allergic my wife would be to them. Over the last two years we have tried numerous things to try to alleviate their affect on her but nothing has worked. To add to this, my daughters have started more activities and have less time to spend with her. We love her tremendously but wish we could turn back time now knowing we aren't the right family for her. Phoebe’s brother, died a year ago from what the vet suspected was a blocked urinary track. We would like to see her go somewhere she can be happy with other ferrets and more attention.
Could you please advise us on what our best options might be? As well as if there is any room in your shelter. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. She is a sweet girl and deserves better! Thanks for your time and hope to hear back soon.
Thank you, Stephen & Traci-Lynn
Shelter Response:
Where are you located?
Owner Response: We live in Greece near Rochester
Shelter Response: Here is the link to what needs to be done to surrender, we have 1 opening, she needs to be vetted and vaccinated before coming here. We will take her, you will need to keep us informed of your intentions so we don't give the only spot we have to someone else.
Owner Response: Thank you for your time. We will definitely take that spot. She is currently due for vaccinations so of course our plan is to have those done first. South Towne is down to 2 doctors so they are not seeing exotics currently. I am trying to make an appointment with another vet. Once this is done I will coordinate with you on a date and time to drop her off. We greatly appreciate your help and again are sorry that we ended up in this position.
Shelter Response: Call Dr. Edwards office in Brockport. He is our vet, tell them she is being surrendered to us.
Owner Response: Called Brockport but they wouldn't be able to see her until June. I then called the Arc and they can probably get her in tomorrow so I just have to call them when they open in the morning to schedule for tomorrow evening. I will keep you updated.
Shelter Response: Okay thanks for keeping us informed.
Owner Response, April 21, 2023: Vet visit today at 2:00. Would I be able to drive her down next Saturday the (29th)? One issue however—all the vets I have talked to are not doing distemper vaccines now. Are you still requiring them?
Shelter Response: The 29th won't work, we will have 14 volunteers here that I will need to direct. It takes about 45 min to fill out paperwork and settle things. What are you feeding her? Everything that belongs to her comes with her. This past year there was a distemper outbreak across the entire country that thousands of ferrets and mink were destroyed. It was so bad that Marshall's suspended breeding and selling kits to the pet stores. It boggles my mind that supposed medical experts would not vaccinate for distemper. I've said my peace. Do you have a dog and if so is the dog vaccinated?
Owner Response: No problem. I could also do the 30th if that worked. Weekdays would be harder for me but I could do one if necessary. She eats Marshall premium ferret food and I will bring at a large supply with her as per your website. I would also like to make a donation when I get there as a thank you! We do have a dog and he is always fully up to date on vaccinations. They however are never even on the same floor of the house together—completely separated. We are over an hour away so we could probably aim for 11am next Sunday.
Shelter Response: We accept donations. Okay 11 next Sunday 30th works. That makes me feel better.. FYI you can bring distemper into your home on your shoes.. I'll see you next Sunday, if anything changes please let us know.
