July 2018

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters! Lance here bouncing in to fill you in on what's been happening at the shelter.
We had 2 short term residents drop in over the summer, meaning Mum took in Dash on July 13, 2018 he was quarantined until July 23, 2018. Then Dash left for his new home with Dr. Sandra on August 7, 2018 . Little Boo came in on August 19th her family didn't want her any more, she was only 1 year old, she left for her new home with Miss Katherine August 23, 2018.
Mum and several of our volunteers decided one of our playrooms needed a makeover. Mum and the volunteers laid a new commercial tile floor, painted walls and trim. Then while the cages were out on the front porch they got a power wash before they were brought back into the finished room. Mr. Dave, Miss Donna, Miss Ili, Miss Kris, Miss Tina all had a hand in making our playroom look better and easier for Mum to clean.
Mum worked a summer run, she drove one student, in a small suburban to meet up with another bus to get this student to a special needs school. A laid back summer run, she got 2 weeks off before the new school year officially stated.
Mum saw Doc Charlie before the school year started and he cleared her to go back to work to do all 3 of her Big Yellow Thingy runs. She started back September 4th, her first week has been a success! Yea for Doc. Charlie, thanks for getting Mum back on her feet and better enough to drive the Big Yellow Thingy once again.
We have this really cool shark sack Mum keeps up on our bed in one of the play areas, that shark keeps eating all the bears that Miss Peach got us, we have to sneak into the sharks belly to get the bears out to put them back under the bed where we hide them. We like sleeping in the shark but not with all the bears in his belly. See he is trying to eat our bed too! Silly shark he is! Mum says he won't hurt our bed and when he gets the bears in his belly it keeps us busy getting them out of his belly.
Mum has been notified that we are up again as Shelter of the Week (SOW) on the Ferret Fabulous Finds Auction House (FFFAH) starting September 10th! We would be honored if you would go check out the items on the auction page.
Mum says I've done enough news, I was getting ready to go bounce anyway.. sooooo
Gotta bounce

July 2018

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters, I'm dropping in to bring you some news from our little corner of the world. We've had a few campers come and go this summer, Oak S. and Bandit S. Mum picked up a summer bus run, she thought she would like to take the summer off then decided we liked eating too much.
We got a call from Yates County Humane Society asking Mum if she had room to take a big boy that was found out running around the streets of Penn Yan NY. Dash came to the shelter on the 13th of July, he needed to be quarantined for 10 days, he was set free to put his feet on the floors July 23rd. He is a big boy 2# 14oz the day he came in. The Big boys name is Dash, he saw OFD on July 26th got his hurt sticks and had a castration surgery, he gained 2 oz while he was in quarantine status. Miss Donna D. picked him up from the hospital to bring him halfway home to Mum in Avon. Mum got him home Friday night at 7:30 way passed Mum's bed time.
I have some funnies to share, Mum wasn't so amused; While Mum was doing meds the other day, she had Jack and Mike out and about, they had the run of the playroom and ferret room (barrier open) while Mum worked her way between the rooms serving soup.
Mum came back into the ferret room and found Mike had gotten up on the work station, he was helping himself to soup. Mum says there is never a dull moment in this house. She grabbed the camera before removing him from the counter top and setting him back on the floor.
See I told you! Take a look at where Max has gotten himself! While Mum was doing meds this morning, she had Max and Shy out and about, they had the run of the playroom and ferret room (barrier open) while Mum worked her way between the rooms serving soup. Just like what Jack and Mike were doing the other day.
Mum went back into the playroom and found Max had gotten up where Mum stores the clean blankies, Max was helping by knocking them off the top of the cage. Mum says he almost knocked himself off the top too.
Mum grabbed the camera before removing him from the top of the mountain of blankies and setting him back on the floor.
Mum and Miss Donna D. made an adjustment to the outside of the cage so it was more secure in keeping the blankies from falling off too easily.
While Mum was at it she made an adjustment to the barriers way on the other side of the shelter playrooms. Shy was able to climb the barriers and was always getting into places she had no business getting into!
Miss Nicky and Mr. Mike S. left us some drainage tubes on Fuzz Butt day. Mum and her 2 legged furless granddaughter measured, cut and split the drainage tube so Mum could slip it over the top of the barrier and keep Sly where Mum puts her. It's a bit harder for Mum to climb the barrier but it is easier to keep track of Sly and Max.
Mu's health has improved enough that she was able to plant her veggie garden, she loves going out in the early morning to water. Mum collects rain water in barrels, she keeps tiny gold fish in them to eat up the mosquito larva. Anyway she is heather than she was when I reported the news the last time. it's time for be to bounce.

June 2018

Hello Cyber friends and shelter supporters,
The babyfood campaign was a huge success! You humans got us 436 jars of baby food! You rock, thanks so much for helping Mum get us baby food for our daily soup. Miss Karlyssa and Miss Amanda were the winners of the raffle campaign.
The Fuzz Butt Tune Up and Picnic: The Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center, Animal Science students came to help Mum set up the Friday before our event. They put up tents, canopies, set up chairs, tables and play pens, filled our swimming pools with water out in the play yard! They got the work done in no time, it was a very hot day, when the work was done it was time to have some fun. The students cooled down with the garden hose. Mum took pictures, she was laughing at the fun the students were having playing in the water.
We ferrets kept OFD busy at the exam table, lots of fur kids came to see him. Miss Donna D. did the grilling, Mr Tom sat at the raffle ticket table for us, Miss Jamie was our official photographer this year, Miss Nicky and Mr Mike pulled the raffle tickets for us. Miss Mary B donated many of the raffle items, made up the raffle baskets, and got the raffle tables set up for Mum to set the prizes out Saturday morning. Here is a link to the pictures Miss Tori has gotten posted on our web, there are more pictures to be added so drop in from time to time to see the newest additions.
We had new shelter supporters join us, and many that have supported our shelter for years came for a day of ferret fun. Long time shelter supporters Mr Pete and Doc Charlie came for the day, Mum says she thinks they come just to shop for ferret (s). both humans walk the perimeter of the ferret room checking out the ferrets that are looking for a new 4-ever home, round and round they go from cage to cage looking them over. Mr. Pete decided on Junior this year. Doc Charlie found the 3 new baby ferrets and deiced they needed to go home with he and Reilly. They came back the following Sunday to get them. The three silent auctions - goodie basket - Mr. Bruce highest bidder, the lap quilt Mis Mary B. highest bidder, and the ferret Christmas decoration Miss Donna D. highest bidder.
The weather was perfect, food galore, and ferrets everywhere you looked. Mum says we are blessed to have so many humans help to make things like this happen. We hope you enjoy the pictures.
It's time for me to bounce

April 2018

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters, life has been crazy here at the shelter these last few weeks!
Mum gets back up on her feet, still a bit teetering at times but is vertical and moving. Then WHAM life gets all Topsy turvy. Mum spent the day at the Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center; with the Animal Science class that was April 13th. Little Lavern was dropped off to camp, her humans have gone to CA to visit their 2 legged furless kids and grand-kids.
Then on April 28th we set up at the Tails on Trails event to help support Happy Tails. They are the humans that saved my fur from freezing back in January 2016. I was found out running around the streets. I think they deserve our support, Mum took me to see Officer Bill and Miss Laura but left the Bombay, Chardonnay and Josie to hang with Miss Kris, Mr. Pete and Miss Tina for the day. See the shirts our great volunteers are wearing? Miss Kris and her husband Mr Brian had them made then donated them to us.. short sleeve only available. If you would like one you can let Mum know they are $10.00 each. Thanks Miss Kris and Mr Brian!
As we reported, Bandit came in on April 23rd, she has been with us just over a week, she is already eating her soup with meds out of a bowl on her own! Another happy dance! Then on April 28th we had 3 kits dropped off to the shelter. Yup your read that correctly, kits as in baby ferrets 6 mo old.
Mum says they are likely Christmas babies that landed in the shelter because the owner didn't spend enough time learning how much work we ferrets kids are! Mum usually gets lots and lots of request to surrender their ferret (s) along May and June because the babies that were purchased for Christmas gifts are no longer wanted.
Mum says animals are a responsibility, not meant to be given as a gift. The babies are here, they love to chase Mum and try to get her shoes off her feet. This morning she stopped to sit with them and they thought that meant they could climb up under her pant legs. I know for a fact shoes and pant legs are off limits to us 4 legged fur kids. Mum let the 2 legged furless kids on her bus help her name these kits. LOOOOOONG story why they came in with no names. The 2 legged furless kids named them: Champagne boy - Caramel, Champagne or a light silver female - Poppins and Black sable boy - Twix.
Scully went to a new home on April 15, 2018 he went to live with Marshmallow and Ollie, they came from here take a look at this picture of the 3 boys hanging out with Nathan.

Now I have some very important information - We have less than 4 weeks before our Annual Ferret Fuzzbutt Tune-up and Picnic June 2, 2018 We hope you will join the fun, mingle with other ferrents and their fur kids, eat, laugh and enjoy a day in the sunshine with us. If you would like a registration form to see Our Favorite Doc drop Mum and email she will get it out to you. The day begins at 10 am and goes until Mum drops. That is usually about 4 pm. Here is a link to our past tune-up events.
We have a new way to send our news letter, you can now subscribe or unsubscribe on your own you don't need us to do that for you. This is the first time I've used this so Mum and I are not sure how it is going to look or work once we hit send.. Mum is holding her breath and I am crossing my paws.
It's time for me to go bounce!

March 2018

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters!
Boy do I have some news for you! It's been one crazy winter!
Remember I told you Mum made the decision to suspend all private surrenders last year? If families needed to surrender their fur kids Mum had approved families ready to slid those fur kids into that home. Mum says she needs to be in better health if she is going to care for us properly. Because of her SLOWNESS Mum needs more time to get what we need, done. She is improving and getting back to her lightning fast feet but there are days when her feet don't move so fast.
A family needed to surrender their two ferrets back in January so Mum got in touch with Miss Danielle who had agreed to help well before she was needed.
The two fur kids went directly to Miss Danielle from their old home. You can read about how they are adjusting and see all the pictures Miss Danielle has taken of them here.
The week of March 9 through 11 a winter storm hit our area, we went without power for 3 days. Mum covered our cages with blankets and kept us in them to keep us warm. The house got down to 40 degrees during the day, colder over night. Mum figured the power would only be out for a little while. Well Mum was sure wrong about that! Plus she could not pick up the gas can to fill the generator to get that started, so the generator sat quiet until Mum's 2 legged furless kid came over Saturday mid-morning to help her, and Mr. Dave get our generator going so we could have heat and some lighting. The generator will run the furnace for heat, and our main shelter room only. Mum dragged the blender and the small one cup coffee maker into the shelter room to heat water and make soup for us. Mum's two legged furless kid dug us out, made paths Mum could navigate without falling.
We got so much snow, that it broke lots and lots of trees, and shrubby in our yard. There was a plus side to all the snow, Mum brought some snow in for us to play in. Jax, M and M loved it, they had a ball playing in the snow, it was too cold for my bouncing feet.
Before the big snow storm hit little Shasta went to a new 4-ever home! That same family is coming back on March 24th to pick up M and M so they can have a new 4-ever home too. Mum took M & M to see OFD on Friday 3/16/18 to get them all checked out and update their shots so they can go live with Miss Karra, Murray, and Shasta.
M & M and Shasta were playtime buddies while Shasta was here. Mum says it is too hard to find a home for 3 or more bonded fur kids going to the same home, so keeping them as a single or 2 gives them a better chance to find a new home. Mum says she is thrilled that Miss Karra decided to come back to get M and M.
Scully may have a new home, the Talledo family adopted Marshmallow and Ollie, their two legged furless children fell in love with Scully so the family is hoping that Marshmallow and Ollie will accept Scully into the family. Mum got pictures of the family when they visited to introduce Marshmallow and Ollie to Scully. Marshmallow loves to hang from the toys his family squeaks.
Mum and Doc Charlie went to Genesee Community College this year to help teach two vet tech classes. The students get to handle the ferrets we take with us, cut nails and check temps, and learn how to sex them. A valuable experience to students that would not normally get hands on classroom experience with ferrets. We are grateful to GCC and Carrie Caccamise, DVM - the Director, Vet Tech Program for inviting us year after year to bring our ferrets in to teach her classes.
Mum is still working part-time she is doing better but as Doc.Charlie told her, she is going to have good days and bad days.. thankfully Doc Charlie has her doing more good days than bad but driving the big yellow thingy and running the shelter are a lot for her at this time. Mum is doing 2 runs a day, by the time she gets home after her afternoon run she is pooped. Doc Charlie has her doing part-time work until the middle of April. He says the warmer weather will make it easier on Mum. Mum says she hopes so.
Since Mum is back to work and doing better she and the board have decided they will host The Annual Ferret Fuzzbutt Tune-up and Picnic day this year. Tune-up date it is June 2, 2018. Mum has been holding off on announcing the date because she was not sure she was going to be physically up to hosting it.
Many of our volunteers have said they will help get things ready. Mum sure hopes so because it's 3 weeks of prep work before the Friday before the event, and she was too sick to do much putting things away last fall. There is a lot of clean up to do.
We have a new shelter supporter, Mr. Antonio, he and his wife live in Brazil. Mum says Brazil is far far away but Mr. Antonio says not so far that he can't help Mum take care of us. We are so very blessed to have so many humans that like to help.

Oops, it is time for me to go bounce

January 2018

Hello cyber friends and shelter supporters,
Lance here bouncing in to bring you some news. Me and Mum think it's good news! Mum seems to be on the mend. That makes me want to bounce even more! It seems the medicine Mum was told to take is doing what it's suppose to be doing, making Mum better! Thanks Doc Charlie for giving us our Mum back !
So far this week (1/6 - 1/9) she's had 3 good days out of 4! That to me with a ferret brain, and springs on my feet, means things are looking up, things are getting better, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, we are getting our Mum back!
We may have to start running away from her feet again, she has been walking so slow (if you could call what she was doing walking) these last 15 weeks, we would lay at her feet to be picked up. Miss Marcia was here last Wed to help around the shelter. Mum told her how we get underfoot these days, Miss Marcia got to see us in action. The 5 pack were in the room Mum was trying to get out of and they all surrounded her feet, Miss Marcia had to come to the room, to pick them up to help Mum get out of the room.
I said; Mum was on the mend, not exactly stable on her feet just yet.
Before Mum got sick if we got anywhere near her feet we would be getting hurt. We knew better than to get too close to her fast as lighting moving feet. Not these days, but it seems that we could be seeing the lightning feet coming back in the very near future. I call that a good thing.
Mum is so thrilled about her improvement, she told Doc Charlie she was changing his name to Miracle Worker Doc! If things continue to get better the way they have these last few days, Mum will be returning to work in Feb to drive the Big Yellow Thingy.
Mum will have to take a physical agility test, before she will be allowed to drive the Big Yellow Thingy again. Once she passes that test on Friday 2/2/18 she will be back to driving 2/5/18.
That of course is on the assumption Doc Charlie thinks she is ready to go back to work, and he writes he a return to work paper. Mum thinks she will be ready by then by the way she is feeling.
We got a phone call from Miss Donna Z. yesterday - the news paper collector for the shelter - . Miss Donna Z fell down and went boom last Friday on the ice! She went down hard and broke her hip. Humans had to take her in the human ambulance to the human hospital. She got home from the hospital Monday after having shinny metal sticks put in her hip to put her back together.
Miss Donna Z called to tell Mum there won't be any news papers for a while, she is going to be out of work for at least 6 weeks. No driving and since picking up stacks and stacks of news papers and delivering them to stores requires driving - we are out of luck for papers until she can go back to work. We hope you get better real soon Miss Donna Z. Mum says she is keeping you in her God Box!
We have a new shelter supporter/volunteer Mr. Tom R. Thanks to Miss Tina B. he found us, stopped in and saw what he liked. Mum's not sure how, since the day he stopped, Mum was in lots of pain and not walking real well at all. Mum was hurt-en for certain that day, Miss Marcia was here helping Mum keep caught up.
But Mr. Tom as taken an interest in our shelter, sending us fur kids things we need when we need them. He's dropping my to help this week. Miss Donna D has been here to help with things too, all our volunteers have been great helping while Mum was so sick and unable to do things around here. We are blessed to have them.
I'm sending a picture of Bombay and all his new Christmas things. Bombay was bare naked when he came to the shelter last June, look at that boy now!
Okay gotta bounce,
  Lance
